Please, Call Me Crazy!

Let’s get “Crazy!”
As soon as I re-blog this I’m going to read it out loud to my son, who sits beside me on the bed. I’m recovering (let’s hope) from yet another procedure on my back. He’s doing his homeschool work. He is 3 years into his diagnosis of pediatric bipolar. I never wanted him to be haunted, held down, pulled back, stigmatized, shamed…just by the knowledge that he had what, in his father, resulted in the utter dessimation of our home and family, the unspeakable physical, psychological and verbal abuse of his siblings and mother. No, he had to know that “bipolar” isn’t the name of a criminal anymore than chicken pox. I know people living full and successful lives…with bipolar. The criminal that destroyed our home and forever flipped the lives of eight precious children was in refusing to accept responsibility…a character trait in his father that preceded bipolar but worked well for him after, as well. The second was a warped family dynamic in which bipolar is the elephant in the living room going back many generations. Children were abused as well–by a mother, grandfather and great-grandfather. Yet the first person to seek treatment, 20 years ago, was labeled “f***ing nuts” while the ones who were acting like nuts, self medicated with substances (legal and illegal) and denying there was anything wrong wit them
So my son has been shown that he has a curse to break. And he’s mastering the tools to do so. It’s a generational curse. And it has little to do with bipolar and much to do with personal responsibility, getting proper treatment, sleep hygiene, good diet, exercise to raise endorphins, helping others to share his blessings, and reading encouraging stories about others who are breaking curses!
